June 29, 2008 FORCE Group Ride at Riverbend Park

The ride went great! We met in the parking lot at 7:30 AM, were off at 8 AM, and the 12 of us enjoyed a very nice, smooth, swoopy cart path ride through the forest and swamp by the Loxahachee River. They have almost 15 miles of hardpack trails through the park which connects with the C-18 canal (several riders rode all the way South to Northlake Blvd. and back! ) and has a connector going under a bridge following the Ocean to Lake Trail (along the Florida Trail) all the way to JD St. Park (though the Fl Tralil is closed to bicycles once inside JD).

Apparantly, there is now an almost completely off-road connection all the way from RPB (where I live) to Jonathon Dickenson ST Park (if you don't mind wading through chest deep water in a couple of places).

We really had a lot of fun, though the only real challenges were the humid heat
and nearly being attacked by the hungry peacocks. WOAAAHHHHK!

Refreshments supplied by Matt at On Your Mark were really enjoyed & appreciated on a hot morning.

Pres. Wilson

RESULTS OF THE F.O.R.C.E. TRAIL WORKDAY @ DYER PARK

Twelve brave souls came to work on this bright Sunday morning, and everyone survived which was an impressive feat due to the heat, and the INCREDIBLE amount of work that got done! Starting at 7 AM, we broke into two and three person groups to address sections of the trail. I had drawn up a simple map that broke the perimeter into 4 parts and the Hill trail into two; everyone knew where they were to work, and we (mostly) shared cell phone #’s so we could stay in contact. On the whole it worked very well.

The biggest job was on the top of the Hill, where a mound of old shellrock had been aging nicely. Dennis Flushing, Dennis Reichel, and Rob went at it with a large Pickax of mine, and were joined by Rennie, Kim, and Tim DeVorce when they had finished their perimeter trail sections. Shovels, picks, and wheelbarrows (and my utility trailer) were used to move the shellrock to reinforce and stabilize several of the soft turns on the Hill. I’m told it still needs more work, but it’s a beginning, and gives us a specific startling point for the next Dyer Trail workday. The ENTIRE Perimeter Trail was pruned, and de-frond..ed? Several fallen trees and logs were removed if they were in sketchy places. Tim Winzell and Andy Kent (returned from Hobe Sound and working at J-Town) found and reclaimed an additional short loop of trail North of the Main entrance-- watch for it when you ride!

Matt of On Your Mark Performance Center was generous in supplying us with ice, water, juice and some goodies which were really appreciated in the heat--as well as the Tech-Nu samples ( I REALLY hope it works as well as it’s supposed to!). A very worthwhile and productive Trail Workday; all involved should be proud of their efforts. Thanks from the Pres. and the club for making the effort to come and work!

Pres. Wilson of F.O.R.C.E.
